Moon Plains in Nuwara Eliya, Nuwara Eliya Overview

Moon Plains, also known as Sandathanne, was recently opened to the public in 2014 and has readily become one of the most loved biodiversity spots for travelers. Earlier it used to be a garbage dump area which has now been converted into a park. Moon Plains is situated 6 km away from the main city of Nuwara Eliya.

During the visit to Nuwara Eliya, one can notice slanting plains, majestic against the backdrop of hills from the Central Highlands. Blanketed in lush green with mountain peaks all-round, one can view this country all at once from Moon Plains. Also known as Mini World’s end or the second World’s End, one can get a 360 degree view of the nine peaks - some of them being Kirigalpoththa, the Great Western Mountain, Kikiliyamana Mountain, Thotupola Mountain, Konical Hill Mountain, Single Tree Mountain - among which the highest peak Pidurutalagala is clearly visible from Moon Plains. As no personal vehicles are allowed, one can rent jeeps to reach to the top. Safari rides, close proximity to nature, diverse flora and fauna in the Moon Plains are some of the few highlights of visiting Moon Plains in Sri Lanka.

Flora and Fauna of the Moon Plains

Round the year, a large number of travellers and tourists visit the Moon Plains because of its rich biodiversity. The spectacular view of the mountain peaks, chirping of birds and the fragrance of Bovitiya flowers definitely brings one closer to nature. Few plants which are seen vividly at Moon Plains are Keena, Alikan, Maharathmal, Wal Kurudu and Gal Weralu. When it comes to fauna, almost around 105 species of birds can be seen. Out of which 15 species of birds are native to Sri Lanka, itself. In the forest and the plains, one can also see Indian buffalo, black nape hare, wild boar, bear monkey, barking deer and other large animals.

Tips for Visiting Moon Plains

  • There is no food corner or restaurant nearby, so try to carry food and snacks on your own.
  • While your visit to the Moon Plains, carry containers to collect up your garbage, do not spill the garbage here and there.
  • Keep yourself hydrated.

How To Reach Moon Plains

For reaching the Moon Plains, which is located a few kilometres away from the main Nuwara Eliya town, one needs to pass the Government Potato Seed Farm at Sita Eliya. Further, the Moon Plains can be accessed by the Seetha Eliya farm which is a 15 minutes drive from Spring Acre region. From the Seetha Eliya Farm, safari jeeps are available to take you to the Moon Plains - 3 km from the farm.
