Mara River, Masai Mara Overview
Mara River flows through Narok County in southern Kenya to the Mara Region in northern Tanzania. It flows through Masai Mara and is popular for playing a major role in The Great Migration. Visit the area from July to September to witness the annual movement of millions of wildebeest, gazelles and impalas across the Masai Mara-Serengeti ecosystem.
Even during off-migration seasons, the Mara River is a grazing spot for animals in the Masai Mara Reserve and home to diverse wildlife, from hippos to elephants. There are few lodges and camps near the river, like Singita Mara River Camp and Acacia Migration Camp, and it is best to book your stay well in advance to avoid any last-minute hassles.
