Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Masai Mara Overview
Ol Kinyei Conservancy is an 18,700-acre private reserve bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok County, Kenya. Established in 2005, it was the first community-run conservancy in the wider Mara ecosystem, with Maasai landowners leasing the land to Gamewatchers Safaris and Porini Camps. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and Cape buffalo live here, and the conservancy sits along an early corridor of the wildebeest migration, with herds arriving from the Loita Plains from January. It holds IUCN Green List recognition.
Ol Kinyei began when Maasai landowners set aside grazing land for wildlife rather than livestock, a model later repeated at neighbouring Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, and Mara North. Lease payments and tourism revenue fund local schools, healthcare, and ranger salaries for the community. Two camps operate inside the conservancy, Porini Mara Camp and Porini Cheetah Camp, along with the Ol Kinyei Safari Cottages, and access is limited to their guests, keeping vehicle and visitor numbers low. Activities include day and night game drives, guided walking safaris with Maasai trackers, and village visits. Wildebeest calving season runs through February and March before herds move toward Naboisho.
