Oloololo Escarpment (aka Siria Escarpment)

Oloololo Escarpment, also called the Siria or Esoit Escarpment, forms the western boundary of the Masai Mara National Reserve. It is part of the East African Rift system, the same rift chain that runs from the Red Sea through Kenya and Tanzania into Mozambique. The Oloololo Gate, one of the reserve's main entry points, sits at its base. From the top, the ridge overlooks the Mara Triangle and the plains toward the Mara River, and several safari lodges are built along its edge.

The Oloololo Escarpment runs along the western edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve, separating the reserve from the Trans-Mara district. Geologically it is part of the East African Rift, and locally it is known by three interchangeable names: Oloololo, Siria, and Esoit. Wildlife tends to concentrate near its base, where swampy ground keeps water available through the dry season while drawing fewer vehicles than the reserve's central plains. Lodges including Angama Mara are built along the escarpment's rim, using the elevation for views over the Mara Triangle and the river below. The Oloololo Gate at its foot is one of the reserve's standard entry points for game drives.
