Manikaran Hot Springs

Hot Springs in Manikaran Sahib, Kasol Overview

Manikaran has hot springs that contain Uranium and other radioactive elements and is believed to cure diseases. The water in these is extremely hot, so much so, that one can even boil rice in these. At the same time, these hot springs are believed to be holy by tourists and pilgrims and are hence popular in this region.

According to Sikhs, it is believed that Guru Nanak Devji visited Manikaran in 16th century AD and during his visit, he wished to cook food for hungry and the needy, but there was no fire source. Hence, he prayed to God, and the spring was turned into a hot spring. However, according to Hinduism, it is believed that Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati spent around 1100 years here. During their stay, Goddess Parvati lost some precious stones in water, and when others were not able to find them, Lord Shiva became very angry and opened his third eye to destruct everything. It was then that Sheshnag (the serpent god) tried to pacify him, and he hissed giving birth to boiling water, resulting in finding the precious stones.
