Stongdey Monastery, Leh Ladakh Overview
Stongdey Monastery is the second-largest monastery in Zanskar, located about 18 km north of Padum. Founded in the 11th century, it belongs to the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism and is renowned for its scenic setting on a hilltop overlooking the valley.
A trip to Stongdey Monastery is one of the highlights of visiting Zanskar. As you climb up to the gompa, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Zanskar Valley that make the effort completely worthwhile. The monastery complex houses several chapels decorated with exquisite murals and statues, giving you a glimpse into centuries of Buddhist art. If you happen to visit in July, you can witness the Gustor Festival, which features traditional cham (masked) dances and vibrant celebrations that draw both locals and travelers. Even outside festival times, you’ll love the peaceful atmosphere here, which makes it an excellent spot to pause and take in the remote beauty of Zanskar.
