Sarawak Orchid Garden, Kuching Overview

The Sarawak Orchid Garden is one of Malaysia's best known orchid collections, set across 15.4 acres in Petra Jaya, Kuching. It grows roughly 82 orchid species, and the one to look for is the Normah, Sarawak's state flower.

Divided into two areas, a nursery and a display garden, the Orchid Garden holds around 75,000 plants across those 82 or so species. Because the nursery sits alongside the display beds, you see the same species at several stages of growth at once. The Borneo lady's slippers are worth picking out as well as the Normah.

How to Reach Orchid Garden

There are many boat rides available from the Kuching Waterfront all the way across the Sarawak River up till Pangkalan Sapi. From there, the Orchid Garden is about 5 minutes walking distance. The boat ride costs RM 1 per person.

Taking a hired cab from the Kuching City Center to Jalan Astana which is in Petra Jaya is another great option. It is a considerably convenient option although, not quite as adventurous as the boat ride. Also, it won’t be as economic as the boat ride would be.

Since the roads are very safe and well maintained, driving all the way up to the Sarawak Orchid Garden quite a good idea. One can drive all the way up till Jalan Astana which is right in the vicinity of the gardens. There are plenty of parking spots around that area, from where the garden is about 3 to 5 minute walking distance.
