Kubah National Park, Kuching Overview

Kubah National Park is located 20 km from Kuching at the scenic backdrop of Matang Range. The park covering an area of 2230 hectares is situated on a plateau and offers to its visitors clear water and streams with cascading waterfalls and bathing pools. Even though the park beholds a myriad of fauna, it is famed for its flora, especially the wide range of palm species.

Kubah National Park has several well-marked trails ideal for trekking. Waterfall Trail is the most famed trail as it provides a tranquilizing time in the cool bathing pools.Over the past few years, Kubah National Park has also come to be well known for its nocturnal frogs. Matang Wildlife Center also forms a part of Kubah National Park.

6. Rayu Trail

How to Reach Kubah National Park

Located 20 km from Kuching, Kubah National park can be reached in a 40 minute taxi ride which costs approximately RM 70 one way. An inexpensive alternative is to take a grab car or van sewa which charges RM 25 one way. 

There is also a bus service, City Link Bus K21, which starts from Saujana Car Park in Kuching  and stops at Kubah. From Kuching, the first bus starts at 8 AM and operates every 2 to 3 hours as per the number of passengers. From Kubah, the last bus to Kuching sets off at 3 PM.

Wildlife at Kubah National Park

Kubah National Park is very diverse in terms of fauna. It is home to bearded pigs, mouse deers, giant squirrels, black hornbills, maroon woodpeckers, white rumped shamas, chestnut-naped forktail and rufous collared kingfisher among several other amphibians, reptiles and birds. It is one of the most diverse areas comprising more than 60 species of frogs.

Flora

Often referred to as ‘The world of Palms’, Kubah National park has more than 93 recorded species of Palms. The forest is mainly dipterocarp trees with patches of Kerangas forest and shrubs. Other than these, orchids and Pitcher Plants are a common sight.

Birdwatching at Kubah

Kubah National Park is famed among birdwatchers due to the diverse birds inhabiting the area. Early morning and evening is considered best for bird watching. Several species of flycatcher, flowerpecker, broadbill and kingfisher can be found among many others. Some indigenous Borneon birds include owls and blyth’s frogmouth, Borneon black magpie, red bearded bee eater, Borneon blue flycatcher and blue banded pitta.

What to Eat at Kubah National Park?

Kubah National Park has no cafeteria or catering service but there is a very basic kitchen with limited cooking facilities. Apart from this, there is a spacious Barbeque Area ideal for an evening gathering.

Where to Stay?

Kubah National Park has overnight accommodation facility which can be booked online or from Kuching office in advance. There are Chalets, Rest houses and Hotels with limited bedding. Thus, requiring a pre-booking. Another alternative is to stay at Matang Wildlife Center which has long houses and other accommodation options.
