Khonsa is the headquarters of Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh and is located in the Tirap Valley surrounded by Himalayan ranges. Streams, deep gorges, dense forests and snow-clad hills are some of the features which describe the terrain in Khonsa.

At an average elevation of about 1,215 m from sea level, Khonsa is a beautiful little hill-station with natural beauty all around it. Bordering Myanmar in the east and Assam in the south, Khonsa is also an important military area in the North-East. Khonsa's beauty lies in most of the natural surroundings, however, one could also enjoy a visit to the Khonsa museum to have a glance at the traditional tribal artefacts. The closest airport and railway station to Khonsa are located in Dibrugarh which is around 215 km away. Hence, you have to travel by road to reach Khonsa directly. You can also find a bus from Tinsukia.

The closest airport is Dibrugarh which is approximately 100 km from Khonsa. It has regular flights from many major cities in India including Kolkata and Guwahati. This is the most suitable option if you intend to travel by air. You can hire a taxi from the airport which will cost around Rs 1200.

How to reach Khonsa by road

Khonsa is well connected to all the neighbouring town and the roads here are in a good condition. There are private and APRTC bus services available. Though the services are not very frequent but it connects to Guwahati and other major cities of Assam.

There are two options for the railway station. One is Dibrugarh 100 km away from Khonsa and is connected to some of the major cities of the country. While the better option is Digboi railway station which is closer than Dibrugarh station. There also are easy taxi services available from the station.
