Nimati, Jorhat Overview

Nimati Ghat, or just Nimati, is one of the most essential ports in Assam. It is the only entry point to the largest river island in the world, Majuli and it serves as a link for ferries that go to Auniata and Kamalabari. This Ghat is located near the Brahmaputra river and is significant not only for local villages here but also for upper Assam.

The ferries that run from Nimati Ghat to Majuli are government-run. Hence, they are simplistic wooden boats that have long benches on the side, facing each other. Right from locals singing folk songs to touching the water of river Brahmaputra to witnessing the sunset, especially from the upper deck of the boat. Apart from that, Nimati Ghat also serves as a commercial carrying centre, financial institution and an administrative headquarters for Assam. It is truly a one-of-a-kind and off-beat attraction which is a must-visit when in Jorhat.

Entry Details

Nimati Ghat is open to visitors throughout the day. There is no entry fee to see this attraction. However, those who wish to use the ferry need to pay for the fare. The ferry runs on all days (Monday to Sunday) and the charges are INR 15 per person. However, if someone wishes to take their vehicle, it would be INR 800. The ferry timings are as follows: (from Nimati Ghat to Kamalabari Ghat)

8:30 AM to 9:45 AM
10:30 AM to 11:15 AM
2:00 PM to 3:15 PM
3:00 PM to 4:15 PM
4:00 PM to 5:15 PM
The first ferry from Majuli leaves at 7:30 AM and the last one leaves Majuli at 3:15 PM.

How To Reach Nimati

Located around 17 kilometres from Jorhat city centre, the closest airport to Nimati Ghat is Jorhat airport which is 19 kilometres away and it would take 38-40 minutes to reach via NH715. Alternatively, Jorhat railway station is 12 kilometres away from Nimati Ghat and it would around half an hour via Nimati Road. Visitors can take a cab, taxi or a bus from the city centre, airport or railway station to Nimati Ghat.
