Galata Tower, Istanbul Overview

Galata Tower is one of the most popular attractions of not just Istanbul but Turkey itself. It is a nine-storeyed building with a height of 67 metres comprising a museum, as well. It is one of the oldest and tallest towers in Istanbul and offers a panoramic view of the city. A restaurant and a cafe sits on the top floors of the building from where you can enjoy your meal with the spectacular view of the city.

The tower features a restaurant and a cafe that can be accessed from the elevator inside the building. A souvenir shop is also located beside the ticketing centre. To go to the top for a panoramic view of the city, you would have to take a life and then climb three flights of stairs. The cafe gives a very relaxing and lively atmosphere, and you can enjoy the best view of Istanbul while having your favourite drink.

History

The tower was built in 1348 inorder to expand the Genoese Colony of Constantinople and served as the tallest structure in the city at that time. It was then called the Tower of Christ, as it helped in the defense system of the city and inspection of the Golden Hour.

During the Ottoman era, the conical top was modified and used to keep a check on fires in the city. During the time of Sultan Selim III, several fires in the monument destroyed the stairs and other parts in the building. After such incidents, a restoration project was initiated and continued for several years. The walls were thickened and windows were built at a great height, making it perfect for defense. The Galata Towers were opened for public in 1967.
