Day Trip to Miyajima, Hiroshima Overview
The island of Itsukushima, where the shrine is built on stilts over the water and its torii stands out in the shallows, is about 45 minutes from the city and the strongest half day you can add. Also on it: Mount Misen by ropeway, Daisho-in temple, and wild deer that will eat paper out of your hands. Two practical notes. A 100 yen visitor tax applies per crossing, and if your ferry is covered by a rail pass you must buy that tax separately at the terminal. The five-storied pagoda is under wraps until 20 December 2026.
