Lynch's Castle, Galway Overview

Lynch’s Castle is a four-story castle, now a bank, acquired by AIB located at the corner of Abbey Gate Street Upper and Shop Street was once owned by the Lynches, an influential and powerful merchant tribe of Galway in the Middle Ages.

In 1808, a large extension was added and later it was bought and heavily altered by Allied Irish Banks. The castle has gradually grown into a popular attraction for visitors who can visit during AIB'S opening hours. However, visitors can only visit the ground floor and can explore its history and enjoy its rich architecture. On the front facade, there is a framed panel that displays the coats of arms of Henry VII, the Lynches, and the Fitzgeralds of Kildare. The castle is preserved with gargoyles, embellished carved windows, ornamental mouldings, and cornices that mark the unique Gothic style of Lynch's castle.
