Mosque of Muhammad Ali, Cairo Overview
The Mosque of Muhammad Ali stands at the top of the Citadel of Cairo, and its domes and minarets are visible from much of the city. Muhammad Ali Pasha had it built between 1832 and 1857 in an Ottoman style that follows the layout of the Sehzade and Sultan Ahmed mosques in Istanbul, a clear break from earlier Cairene design. Alabaster facing on the walls gives it a second name, the Alabaster Mosque.
Constructed in the 19th century by Muhammad Ali Pasha, the Ottoman ruler of Egypt, its distinctive design, characterized by its grand domes and towering minarets, showcases the influence of Ottoman architecture. The mosque's interior is adorned with intricate marble work, ornate chandeliers, and richly decorated ceilings, reflecting the luxury of its era. The minarets, each adorned with intricate balconies and topped with conical caps, serve not only as architectural features but also as functional elements from which the call to prayer is traditionally issued.
