Etymology

It was believed that the Government developed the steel plant to enhance the economy of this region by supporting the backward and scheduled communities. Since the primary purpose was to alleviate poverty and to embrace the development of local communities, this place bagged the title ‘Bhalai’ or do good for the people. It is also believed that Bhilai derived its name from the local scheduled tribe Bhils that resided and populated in this region.

It is interesting to know that around 70 dialects of Chhattisgarhi are being spoken in this region. Folk songs like Sohar for childbirth and Bihav for wedding flavour their quintessential culture. Bhilai, also known as Bhilai Nagar, is a planned city which is now one of the most industrialized zones in India. This region has not only experienced the rule of Haihaivansi Rajputs and Bhonsle Marathas but also possess an imprint of British hegemony. To be exact, the British was the prime reason to set the Bhilai steel plant which transformed the cluster of remote villages to a commercial hub. Now, Bhilai has the privilege of being the seventh fasted growing city in the world.
