Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project is on the west coast, and this project aims to protect and rescue sea turtles as well as make sure that the eggs hatch safely without any interference from predators. One can visit the Turtle hatchery to participate in this project as well as closely look into the process of rescuing and nurturing sea turtles.
The main attraction, which is the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, looks into the proper hatching and protection of the sea turtles. They also take care of sea turtles with disabilities and treat the ones who have become weak due to fishing activities. Locals, as well as international visitors, are welcomed to help in their goal to save this endangered species and also witness the magical process of releasing the baby sea turtles back into the sea. The place is especially suitable for kids but provides to be a once in a lifetime experience for all.
The Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project was started by Dudley Perera to conserve the sea turtles and protect them from predators like birds, dogs and crabs. Kosgoda was established in the 1980s and is one of the 18 hatcheries in Sri Lanka devoted to the proper breeding of this endangered species. This project now has several volunteers that all have the primary goal of protecting and rehabilitating of the sea turtles in the ocean.
The volunteers patrol the beach at night to make sure that any mother turtles have proper conditions to lay eggs. They also carry the eggs back to the hatchery to make sure they hatch properly without any harm from predators and then release the baby sea turtles back into the ocean once properly hatched.
