A sandbar between the Bentota river and the Indian Ocean

FAQs on Beaches in Bentota

What makes Bentota good for watersports?

The river. Jet skiing, banana boats and windsurfing happen on the flat lagoon water behind the beach, while the sea side gets the surf. Few beaches offer both within a few hundred metres.

Is the swimming safe?

In season, in the sheltered stretches, yes. The open ocean side has rip currents at times and there are no lifeguards on most of the beach, so ask locally rather than assuming.

What is there besides the beach?

Boat trips up the Bentota river through the mangroves, the Brief Garden created by Bevis Bawa, and Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa's country estate, both within half an hour and both worth the detour.

What about the turtle hatcheries?

There are several along this coast and their standards vary considerably. Some are genuine conservation projects; others keep turtles in small tanks for photographs. Ask how long hatchlings are held before release.

When should I visit?

November to April. The southwest monsoon from May makes the sea rough and closes much of the watersports operation, though the river trips continue.
