Ana Sagar Lake, Ajmer Overview

The gorgeous Ana Sagar Lake is a magnificent artificial lake that is located in the city of Ajmer in Rajasthan, India. This lake is best visited during the sunsets when the views are extraordinarily marvellous to look at. The sight of the lake from the nearby temple is particularly enchanting. Do not forget to take a camera to capture the fantastic and heavenly views that you behold here. However, the lake may dry up during the summers.

The Ana Sagar Lake is surrounded by Daulat Bagh Gardens, which is a splendid garden full of vast open spaces and lush greenery, and the Khobra Behroon temple- two popular attractions of Ajmer that tourists prefer to visit along with a day trip to the beautiful lake. The lake is only 13 kilometres away from the main city of Ajmer. An island can be spotted in the centre of the lake. Tourists love to indulge in boating or water scooter rides here. The lake is about 4.4 metres deep and spreads over an area of 12 kilometres.

History of Ana Sagar Lake

  • This picturesque lake was established in Ajmer by the emperor Anaji Chauhan. The king built the lake at some time between 1135 and 1150 AD. The construction of the lake was undertaken to ensure the betterment of the civilisation, and this process began when a dam was raised across the Luni River.

  • The catchments of the lake were constructed with the support and assistance of the community, while the Pavilions near the lake, which are commonly referred to as 'Baradari' and are mostly a marble-stoned pavilion were constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the year 1637.
  • The surrounding Daulat Bagh Gardens, renowned for their greenery and ambience, was established by another Mughal ruler, Jahangir.
  • The circuit residence on the hilltop in the vicinity was once used to serve the British Residency.
  • To ensure that the splendour and beauty of the lake remain pure and unharmed, the High Court has prohibited any further construction in the catchment area of the Ana Sagar Lake.

You can visit the quiet and peaceful island that is located in the midst of the lake. The island can be reached on a water scooter or a boat. The boat or water scooter can be hired from the eastern side of the Daulat Bagh.
  • Tourists and visitors are often found sprawling along the lake, jogging, or indulging in the street food such as cotton candy, popcorn and gol-gappe that are sold by the local vendors in the evenings.
