Ahmednagar is a city located in the Ahmednagar District of Maharashtra, at a distance of about 120 km to the northeast of Pune and 114 km to the southwest of Aurangabad. With its 500+ years of history, the City of Ahmednagar gets its name from its founder Ahmed Nizam Shah I. Ahmednagar is a small town compared to the nearby cities of Pune or Aurangabad, and not much of development has happened in the region. However, it is the birthplace of the cooperative movement and has about 19 Sugar Factories. Marathi is the primary language of communication and also the official language of the region.

History

Ahmednagar was found by Ahmed Nizam Shah I in 1494. He found the new town on the battlefield where he defeated the Bahamani Armies. Ahmed later established the Nizam Shahi Dynasty, which started from the very same place. The Dynasty ruled the place until the Mughal Conquest by emperor Shah Jahan in 1636. The Mughal Empire also saw the start of its end in the Ahmednagar, with the death of Aurangzeb. The Burial of Aurangzeb is located in Khultabad marked by a small monument. Later came the Nizams of Hyderabad who were overthrown by the Peshwas. Ahmednagar was invaded by the British with the help of General Wellesley. The once almost Invulnerable Ahmednagar was used by the British to captivate Jawaharlal Nehru along with some other Nationalists in a house arrest. This fort is where Nehru wrote his book “The Discovery of India”.
