Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Museum, Ahmedabad Overview

Situated in the premises of Moti Shahi Mahal at Shahibaug in Ahmedabad, Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Museum is a museum and a memorial dedicated to the 1st Deputy Prime Minister of India - Sardar Vallabhai Patel. The museum has exhibitions in English, Hindi and Gujarati.

Surrounded by a beautiful garden, the museum also has umpteen exhibits and photographs from the Indian National Movement and specifically from Patel's life. The memorial exhibits over a thousand of memoirs and relics that were significant to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and his life. One highlighted feature of the museum is the original Indian flag from the 1930s designed by the Congress party of the time.

3D Laser and Sound Show at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial

The memorial organises a regular 3D laser and sound show every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) which essentially narrates the story of Indian Independence. It takes visitors back to the chronological beginning of the narrative through the excellent laser mapping system installed here. Besides paying larger focus upon Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the laser show also talks about other prominent freedom fighters.

History of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial

Housed within the walls of the Moti Shah Mahal built by Shah Jahan in 1622, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial was further colonised by the British in the 1700s. It was also a place of thought and stay for the renowned Indian poet and philosopher Rabindranath Tagore.

The building served as the official residence of the Governor of Gujarati, post-independence. It was called the Raj Bhavan before it was established as the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial in 1978. It was installed by the then CM, Shri Babubhai Jasbhai Patel as a tribute to the famous Indian politician, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial is about 5 to 6 km from the city centre which can be a 12 to 15 drive. There are ample intra-state bus options to reach the memorial.

Located 5 km from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (The Ahmedabad International Airport), the memorial is a 10-minute taxi drop or a half-hour bus ride from the airport. The Ahmedabad Railway Station is 5 to 6 km from the museum, which can be covered by a 13 to 15-minute drive or a half-hour bus journey.
