The fauna at the park also includes spotted deer, monitor lizards, mugger crocodiles and Sri Lankan frogmouth. Around 150 floral species have been identified here.

History of Wasgamuwa National Park

The remnants of a canal and irrigation tanks built by King Parākramabāhu I, ruler of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa in the 12th century, were discovered at Wasgamuwa. During a battle between the Cholan King Elara and Sinhalese King Dutugamunu, the armies camped at Yudungananpitiya inside Wasgamuwa. Initially designated as a game reserve in 1907 and later declared as a nature reserve in 1938, Wasgamuwa became a national park in 1984.
