Sea Turtle Hatchery, Unawatuna, Unawatuna Overview

The Sea Turtle Hatchery is situated in Habaraduwa, and was established in the year 1986, has successfully rescued and taken care of more than 1,000,000 sea turtles. About the Rescued Sea Turtles

Sri Lanka has five different sea turtle species which are in the Galle district and the Hambantota District. The various species include- Olive Ridley Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Green Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherhead Turtle.

Conservation and Preservation of the Sea Turtles

The sea turtles are in grave danger due to the pollution of the water by the nearby hotels. Further, many people also consume sea turtle eggs or use them to make ornaments and curios for sale. Thus, due to the sale, consumption of eggs and flesh along with the polluted water has put the species into danger.

We can conserve the sea turtles by adopting measures like educating the people and creating awareness about the harm that is caused to the sea turtles. This activism by various organization in Sri Lanka will enable the people to refrain from activities like consuming turtle eggs or making them objects of sale. Further sea pollution is also encouraged to be minimized, and special care should be taken of the coral reefs, seaweeds, and feeding areas of the turtle to ensure the protection of the sea turtles.
