Maharana Pratap Smarak, Udaipur Overview

Maharana Pratap is one of the most important rulers of Indian history, especially of Rajput history, and Maharana Pratap Smarak in Udaipur is a memorial constructed in his fond memory. He is obviously a much respected and revered figure in Rajasthan as well as in the rest of India, which is why his memorial is still a frequently visited attraction in the City of Lakes. Situated on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, this iconic structure is a landmark in the city.

The memorial is a tribute to the great king and his loyal companion of years, the famous horse Chetak, who is famous for his sacrifice for the Rana in the Battle of Haldighati. Here, Maharana Pratap sits atop his favourite mount as a bronze statue, wielding a spear and charging towards the enemies of Rajputana. The statue memorial, which is 11 feet high and weighs 7 tonnes, was built in the year 1948 by Maharana Bhagwat Singh of Mewar with the help of public trust.

Significance

One of the most important battles of Indian history, the Battle of Haldighati, fought between the Mughals and the Rajputs in 1576 AD, is reflected in the statue here. This is the battle where the armies of Maharana Pratap locked horns with the mighty Mughal warriors of Akbar. Although the Mughal forces turned out victorious, they failed to capture the Rana as his loyal and faithful Chetak, although hurt and injured, managed to escape with his faster and take him to safety. He gave his life in the process, which made his name is inseparable from the Rana and almost held in as high esteem as his.
