Sringeri Tourism

Commonly known as Sri Kshetra Shringeri, Sringeri is a famed hill town nestled in the Chikkamagaluru District of Karnataka. It is a pilgrimage centre, mainly known for the Sharada Peetham which was built by the great Adi Shankara in the 9th century. According to experts, Adi Shankaracharya stayed here for 12 years and preached to his disciples. Historic Significance of Sringeri

Source
According to popular folk tales, Adi Shankaracharya is said to have selected Sringeri to settle and preach. This is because when he was walking by the Tunga river, he saw a cobra with a raised hood, providing shelter from the hot sun to a frog about to spawn. Impressed with the place where natural enemies had gone beyond their instincts, he stayed here for twelve years.

Four Guardian Temples

Adi Shankara had created four guardian temples on all four sides of the Sringeri village-
  • Kala Bhairava temple in the East- dedicated to Lord Kala Bhairava, a fiercer form of Lord Shiva- representing the march of time.
  • Kere Anjaneya temple in the West-dedicated to Sri Anjaneya, carved on a rock inside a cave.
  • Kalikamba temple in the North - dedicated to Devi Kalikamba, a beautiful form of the Goddess.
  • Durgamba temple in the South- dedicated to Devi Durgamba, also known as 'Vana (forest) Durga', owing to its remote location in the woods.

Etymology

The name 'Sringeri' is derived from the name 'Rishyashringa griri', a small hill nearby that is said to have contained the heritage of Rishyashringa and his father Rishi Vibhandaka. As per an episode in the Bala-Kanda Ramayana, Guru Vashishtha had narrated as to how Rishyashringa had brought rains to the drought-stricken kingdom of Romapada.

I was hurt and mentally wounded inside the temple. I am 60 years senior, a teacher in profession. I regret to say that last year I took a visit to the temple along with my wife, who is also a teacher (Read More) and my daughter. I purchased a ticket for special darshan by paying Rs. 500. I saw poojaris were busy with taking care of only those who are performing special, special poojas paying more, I think. They are not even free to do archanas in our names. One who is a guard an rude idiot in side the temple shouting with us and all the other devotees even not allow to sit in front of goddess. I was disappointed of the behaviours, mannerism and humanlessness there. That too in front of sharadambha, the goddess of education. At last we came out for darshan of shankaracharya idol, where the poojari after mangalarathi, served us theertha and flowers. The flower was old and dried up one. What is this? Shankaracharya a great sage, philosopher, and founder of sringeri mutt thought the adwaitha phylosophy to the world. At last I request the management to take discilinary action against those who are spoiling the name and fame of the goddess and her disciple. After this incident I have not made up my mind to visit again.
