Somnath, whose name translates to "protector of the moon", is home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, among the most sacred Shiva shrines in Hinduism. The temple standing today, consecrated in 1951, is the latest in a long line of reconstructions on this site: it was destroyed and rebuilt repeatedly over roughly a thousand years, most notably after Mahmud of Ghazni's raid in 1024 CE, with the modern rebuilding championed by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel after Independence. On the temple's seafront stands the Baan Stambh, an arrow-shaped pillar marking what locals call the "eternity point": an inscription stating that a straight line south from this spot runs unbroken by land all the way to Antarctica. Set on the Saurashtra coast, Somnath's evening aarti and sound-and-light show draw visitors well beyond its religious pilgrims.
