Jogigundi Falls, Shimoga (Shivamogga) Overview

Tucked away from the prying eyes of the world, the Jogigundi Falls are situated in the midst of the dense forests of Western Ghats. The unique feature of these falls is the point of origin. Unlike traditional waterfalls they do not fall from a height, instead they originate from a cave and run through a hill. The falls are not accessible by road and it requires a trek to reach the falls.

The trek route is not difficult and is an ideal destination for a half day visit. The place is made up of eroded rock and lush green forest and there is a natural pool of water at the end of the trek where you can swim and enjoy the bounties of Nature.

Food availability

There is no food available on the trek route therefore it's better to carry some quick refershments.

Water availability

There is a fresh water supply at the top of the water however it is advisable to carry your own water for safety reasons.

Tips and Tricks

The forest around the falls are quite deep and therefore it is advisable to not venture too deep into them without a local guide as there are chances of getting lost.

Accommodation

There is no accommodation at the summit of the waterfall and it has to be arranged for in Agumbe village itself. The options available are the Inspection Bungalow and Dodda Mane, a home-stay.

Trek Routes

To reach Jogi Gundi falls from Agumbe you have to travel a distance of about 100m on the Agumbe - Sringeri highway and then take a right turn. Follow the road for about 3 km and then take a right turn again. No vehicles are allowed beyond this point. The distance from here until the waterfalls is about 600m. If you want to savour the experience of trekking you can walk from Agumbe bus stand itself. The distance is about 5 km and the route abounds in NatureÕs beauty, thus ensuring that you truly enjoy the walk.

How to reach Jogigundi Falls

  • Rail: Udupi is the nearest railway station to Agumbe situated at a distance of 53 kms. You can either take local buses or hire cabs to reach Agumbe.

  • Road: Agumbe is well connected by road to Shimoga, Udupi and Mangalore. Therefore you can take local buses from any of these places. There are also KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) buses plying between Bangalore and Agumbe.
