History of Santa Maria in Trastevere

Santa Maria in Trastevere was built in the early 1140s, but some parts of the monuments date back to the 3rd and the 4th century. Initially, Pope Callixtus I founded the church as a refuge for retired soldiers. The then ruler of Rome, Emperor Alexander Severus, permitted the use of the area where the church now stands. The 12th century monument that we get to see now was built after destroying the old sanctuary. This part of the work was taken over by Pope Innocent II till its completion in 1143.

Most portions of Santa Maria in Trastevere belong to the 12th century. However, the early foundation of the sanctuary still holds the structure. The interiors are adorned with mosaic work and tall Corinthian pillars that were made from stone sourced from the ruins of the public baths of Caracalla. The ceiling has an octagonal painting of the Assumption of the Virgin. The exteriors bear elaborate motifs significant of the architecture of late-medieval and Renaissance era. The Church also houses a Chapel, the relics of some saints and earlier popes associated with Santa Maria in Trastevere.
