Rethymnon Old Town

Rethymnon Old Town, Rethymno Overview

Rethymnon Old Town is an ancient town in Greece located on the northern coastline of Rethymnon, overlooking the sea of Crete. The picturesque settlement has narrow cobblestone streets, vibrant alleys, and whitewashed Venetian houses with red-tiled roofs. The Venetian harbour, with its towering lighthouse and waterfront lined with boats, is the most serene part of the old town.

Tour the Ethnikis Antistaseos Street with popular traditional Cretan cafes, restaurants, traditional taverns, and shops selling souvenirs, clothes, handicrafts, and more. Most of these services may remain closed in the off-season. The Basilica of St Francis, the Neratzes Mosque with its towering minaret, and the 16th-century Fortezza are must-visit historical sites. Explore Cretan history and culture at the Venetian Loggia and Historical and Folklore Museum. Visit the Rimondi fountain with its three lion heads. The 16th-century arched Goura Gate serves as the entry point of the old town. Rethymnon Old Town dates back to the 1300s and is a beautiful mixture of Ottoman and Venetian Renaissance architecture. The town's narrow alleys can only be explored on foot or by bus as no cars are allowed.
