Egyptian Lighthouse

Egyptian Lighthouse Rethymnon, Rethymno Overview

The Egyptian lighthouse is located at the edge of the Venetian harbour of Rethymno. Surrounded by mesmerising turquoise waters, it is one of the city's most famous and culturally significant monuments. The 9 m high lighthouse towers over the entire city and is attached to a stone breakwater, protecting the city from tides and currents.

One of the tallest Egyptian lighthouses in Crete, it was built in the 1830s when Rethymnon was under Egyptian reign. The lighthouse, with its dome-shaped top, resembles traditional minarets and has been non-functional for a long time. Visitors can also sit at one of the several cafes, bars, and restaurants specialising in traditional Cretan cuisine located along the Venetian harbour. Rimondi Venetian Fountain, Neratze Mosque, the Venetian Fortezza, and the Archeological Museum of Rethymnon are nearby attractions.
