Nalbana Bird Sanctuary, Puri Overview

Nalbana Bird Sanctuary is situated on the Nalbana Island in Odisha, which is a part of the Chilika Lake- India’s largest brackish water lagoon. It is known for the large green spaces of land that are the refuge points of several migratory birds that flock here every year during the winter season. For the same reason, the sanctuary is a big hit among nature lover, birdwatchers and photography buffs. During the peak season, you may be able to spot as much as 181 different varieties of birds here which is a treat for the avid bird watchers.

The area was declared a bird sanctuary in 1972 under the Wildlife Protection Act and has ever since become one of the most popular tourist spots in the region. Among the diverse variety of avifauna species that you can spot here that include both rare and exotic birds, the most popular ones include bar-headed geese, greater flamingos, pink storks, magnificent raptors, spotted sandpipers, black-tailed godwits, Goliath herons, black-headed ibis and northern pintails shuffle.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Nalabana Bird Sanctuary is during the winter season, between the months of November and March. This is the peak season when thousands of migratory birds fly to the spot. The area becomes a wonderful confluence of bright colours and bird activities. On the contrary, you cannot visit the sanctuary during the monsoons as the island submerges due to inundation.

  1. Make sure you do not plan a trip to the island in the rainy season as the island submerges due to inundation.
  2. You should also carry a pair of binoculars before you visit the Nalabana Bird Sanctuary as the boat stops around 200 metres before the sanctuary.

How to Reach

The nearest airport to Nalabana Bird Sanctuary is in Bhubaneshwar that is 105 km away from Barkul and the nearest railway station is in Balugaon that is 6 kms away from Barkul. From Barkul, you can take a boat to reach the island and spot the beautiful birds.
