The monument was built in 1958 to celebrate Cambodia's independence from France colonization on 9th November 1953. This 37-meter tall tower was designed by the country's famous architect Vann Molyvann. Located at the intersection of Norodom Boulevard and Sihanouk Boulevard in the centre of the city, it is one of the major landmarks for tourists and locals visiting Phnom Penh, due to its distinct design. Independence day celebrations in Phnom Penh

The Independence monument is the central venue for celebrating important national holidays like Independence Day and the Constitution day, during which the leaders gather to hoist the national flag followed by parades and processions. On these days, a member of the royal family or a high ranking government official lit a ceremonial flame on the interior of the pedestal of the monument, which is also decorated with flowers.
