What is Nagore Famous for?

The Nagore Dargah, built over the tomb of Sufi saint Shahul Hameed is the most famous of all places in Nagore. The saint, locally referred to as Nagore Andavar, meaning the 'ruler of Nagore'. Although he was a saint, he was believed to have miraculous powers, having demonstrated them to cure the ailment of the Hindu ruler of Thanjavur, king Achyuta Deva Raya. With this, his followers expanded to accommodate people of all the regions residing in the place. Thus, while his dargah was constructed by his followers, many contributing to the minarets on the tomb, the tallest minaret was contributed by the Maratha ruler of Thanjavur, Pratap Singh. Devotees even today, visit the place with faith in their heart of the magic of the hoky Sufi saint.
