Hammams, Marrakech Overview

One of the most rejuvenating experiences in Marrakech is going to a hammam and indulging in a full spa day. The city is lined with numerous luxury and budget-friendly hammams, either public or private, with many located inside hotels. Some popular ones are Hammam de la Rose, Les Bains D'Orient, Royal Mansour, Hammam Rosa Bonheur, La Sultana Marrakech and Alphais Spa. The busiest days are generally Thursdays and Fridays, before Friday prayers.

All hammams in Marrakech essentially follow the same basic three steps: hot steam which stimulates the blood flow and opens up the pores, proceeding to scrub with the famous Moroccan black soap and traditional kessa glove and ending with a cold water bath for relaxation and rehydration. Some public hammams might have large group steam rooms, such as Hammam Dar el-Bacha, while others like Le Bain Bleu will offer a more private experience. Most hammams have running water from taps as opposed to bathing pools; hence it is always a safe option to carry a few essentials when going to a public hammam, such as a bucket, clean clothes and towels.
