Thangassery Lighthouse, Kollam Overview

The Thangassery Lighthouse, also known as the Tangasseri Light House, boasts of being the second tallest on the entire coast of Kerala and is thus even one of the most visited lighthouses in the state on this account. Located at Tangasseri in the city of Kollam, it is one of the two lighthouses in the Kollam Metropolitan Area and is presently under the surveillance of the Chennai Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships.

The majestic tower is clearly visible and distinct, with its painted red and white oblique bands, and looks pretty indeed in all its glory and majesty. The tower has a total height of 41 metres, or 135 feet, and has been operational since the year 1902.

History of Thangassery Light House

Before the construction of the Thangassery Light House, the British East India Company had constructed a tower with an oil lamp at the spot. In 1902, it was finally decided to build the lighthouse. By 1930, it began to develop significant cracks in its structure, and major modifications were made to it in 1932, 1940, 1962, 1967, 1990 and then finally in 1994. In 2016, an elevator facility was developed at the Thangassery Lighthouse for the convenience of the visitors.

Tips For Visiting Thangassery Lighthouse

How To Reach Thangassery Lighthouse

The Thangassery Light House is easily accessible since it is located in a good area, just 7.9 kilometres away from the centre of the town of Kollam. One can quickly reach the place by hiring a cab or by using means of public transport; though the former is the more advisable option. The lighthouse is also located near the Kollam Beach, and one can even choose to walk to the lighthouse from the beach.

Thangassery Beach

The Thangassery Beach is one of the fascinating beaches in the entire region of Kollam and is constructed in the shape of an Old Portuguese Fort. The lighthouse is located on this scenic beach and has been declared by many to be the most attractive point of this place. Even though a lift was set up in this place for the ease of the visitors, some people still choose to climb up 195 spiralling steps to reach the top. Visitors love to climb up the lighthouse late in the evening to have a panoramic view of the surrounding areas, and to soak in the beauty of nature. Other than the enchanting scenes all around, one can also view a magnificent fort which was built by the Dutch and the Portuguese, and is now in ruins.
