The annual Kollam pooram takes place every year in April, organised in connection with the festival of the Asramam Sri Krishnaswami temple, at the Asramam Maidan. The festival is widely popular, and witnesses a large amount of footfall each year. A grand procession of elephants arrives from different temples, the most famous among them being from the Thamarakulam Sri Mahaganapathy Temple and the Puthiyakavu Bhagawathy Temple. The kudomattam then takes place, which is a display of colourful umbrellas atop a traditionally decked elephant, to the beats of drums known as melam. The pooram ends with a fireworks display at night.
