"Turquoise Waters and Silver Sands"

Koh Nang Yuan Tourism

The picturesque island of Koh Nang Yuan is a group of three tiny landforms connected to each other by stretches of blinding white sand. It is located in the Gulf of Thailand towards Northwest of Koh Tao just 15 minutes away. The island is full of greenery and is surrounded by turquoise blue waters. The lush greenery and the coral blue along with white sandbars create a picturesque sight like something straight out of a movie or a postcard. The island poses as a perfect destination for a day trip, but if you are looking to have a more relaxing experience amidst all the serenity, it is recommended you stay overnight. The beaches are the centre of attraction on the island. The water is extremely clear and looks blue in colour due to the deposition of corals underwater.

It is common to hike up to the viewpoint and get a bird's eye view of the surrounding beaches.Snorkelling is a popular activity on the island of Koh Nang Yuan. There are 5 major snorkelling spots on the island. It is usually featured in the itineraries of snorkelling trips taken from other islands like Koh Tao, Koh Phangan, and Koh Samui. What makes snorkelling an even more fascinating experience is the abundance of diverse marine life easily visible through the clear water.

Tickets and timings

The island has an entry fee of 100 Bahts. This is compulsory and there is no way to escape it. For day-trippers the island opens at 9 am in the morning and is closed by 5 pm. Except for the people staying in the resort, tourists are not allowed on the island after 5 pm.

Things to do

Beaches
The beaches are the primary attractions on the island. The sandbars connecting the three landforms of the island create a picturesque view. The tourists are not allowed to lay down their own towels which means, you will have to rent out the beach-bed with an umbrella provided by the resort. This is actually a good option as the heat from the sun is going to make you want to sit in some shade. Sometimes the beach can get too touristy and crowded. If you are looking for a more private experience on the beach then it is recommended you stay overnight. By 5 pm all the tourists are required to be out of the island and only the people staying in the resort will be allowed to stay back. This beach is both a sunset and a sunrise beach.

Snorkelling
The island of Koh Nang Yuan is a popular snorkelling spot. It is usually included in snorkelling trips. There are many snorkelling spots here suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. Snorkelling coaching is also given here. Some of the major snorkelling spots are Japanese Garden, Green Rock, White Rock and the Twin Peak. The crystal clear water makes going snorkelling a better experience. If you don’t have snorkelling gear then you can buy or rent from dive shops or the resort will help you out. These dive shops include ‘Easy Divers’.

Viewpoint
The hike up to the viewpoint is just 15-20 minutes. The hike is definitely worth the sweat as a view like this one is often only seen in movies or at the back of a postcard. The three landforms connected by the white sandbars create a phenomenal sight. It is an ideal spot to try out your photography skills and to fly drones.

Scuba Diving
Scuba diving is also available on the island at many spots such as the Japanese Garden. The scuba gear can be rented out. Swimming: The shallow waters on the beaches make it a worthy spot for swimming. You feel as though you are swimming with marine life by your side. Sometimes the currents can be strong.

Tips

  • There are no plastics allowed on the island. They will confiscate any piece of plastic you are carrying on your arrival.
  • The resort restaurant and bar are pretty expensive and hence it would be cheaper if you brought snacks and water on our own if you are a daytripper.
  • Be sure to pack them in a non-plastic container as plastic is not allowed on the island.

Accomodation

The only accommodation provided on the island is by the Nang Yuan Diving Resort. This is the only resort on the island and their rooms range from 1,200 Bahts to 14,000 Bhat per night. The prices depend on the room’s standard and the season. If you are travelling solo, then the cheaper option would be wooden cabins. The island is not suitable for camping.
Koh Nang Yuan is a tiny resort island with only one resort on the entire island. There is also a bar and a restaurant of the same resort. The resort takes full advantage of its monopoly and prices their food and drinks four times the usual cost. Even an entry fee of 100 Bahts cannot control the overcrowding of tourists on the island, especially during peak seasons.
