The Melissani cave is a natural limestone grotto on Melissani lake surrounded by trees and forests. It is located on the east coast of the island of Kefalonia. The cave is divided into two parts connected via a narrow channel. The best time to witness the sunlight from the hollow area falling on the glistening crystal-blue water to make it sparkle is around 1:00 PM. The caves are open in summer from May to October.
Take a five-minute drive from Sami town to reach the caves. Enter a tunnel that leads directly to the cave entrance and take a 15-minute rowing boat tour. Located 20m below the earth’s surface, the hollow within the cave emerged as a result of an earthquake. According to Greek mythology, the Melissani cave was the cave of the nymphs. Remains of a temple built by the nymph Melissani was discovered here and are now on display in the Archaeological Museum of Argostoli. Drogarati Cave, Agia Efimia village, and Karavomylos village are close to the cave.
