History of Kausani

Back in the olden days, Kausani was known as Valna. The town became famous in 1929 when Mahatma Gandhi made the village his temporary abode to finish his works on Anasakti Yoga. The place is also famous for the great Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant. Mahatma Gandhi dubbed Kausani as “the Switzerland of India” owing to its natural beauty. Initially, the town was inhabited by the Kumaoni and Garhwali communities and was a part of the Almora district. In November 2000, Uttarakhand was created as a separate district and Kausani came to be a part of it.
