At about 2,171 metres, Mukteshwar is one of Kumaon's higher hill towns, named after the centuries-old Mukteshwar Mahadev temple that sits at its highest point. The Indian Veterinary Research Institute, established here in 1893, still occupies much of the town's flat ridge and gives Mukteshwar a quieter, more institutional feel than nearby Nainital. Chauli ki Jali, a sheer limestone cliff a short walk from the temple, is the town's best-known viewpoint, with clear-day sightings of Nanda Devi and the Panchachuli range. Apple and apricot orchards cover the surrounding slopes, and several old British-era estates have been converted into homestays. The pace here is slower than other Kumaon towns, better suited to short stays built around walks, views, and orchard visits than a packed sightseeing itinerary.

The quaint town got its name from the belief that Lord Shiva killed a demon here and gave him Mukti or salvation. With lush green trails and narrow lanes, Mukteshwar is a popular destination for trekking, apart from rock climbing and rappeling. Major attractions here are the picturesque orchards, coniferous forests, rolling meadows, and little cottages and homes built in quaint colonial style.
