The Bar Reef

The Bar Reef, Kalpitiya Overview

The bar reef is an essential part of the Marine National Park and remains one of the most critical sites in the entire country of Sri Lanka. The Bar Reef in Kalpitiya, which is nearly 2 kilometres away from the land, has been identified as an area which needs to be protected. Due to the effects of uncontrolled tourism and fishing in that area, there was considerable damage done to the reef.

It was found that as much as 94 per cent of the entire ridge was damaged, and thus lost. The marine life was also in harm's way to such a great extent, that concerned authorities feared that the reef would disappear. However, corrective measures have been taken to protect what remains of the reef. And more efforts are promised to be taken to restore the area to its earlier state, if not making it better. The bar reef is believed to be damaged not only due to direct effects of human interaction with the beach, leading to overuse of the corals, but also because of other environmental causes that have affected the reef indirectly.

Currently, with the help of many organizations, including the United Nations Development Programme and the Sri Lankan Navy and police, the area is under protection. No one is allowed to cross the border to that reef, even fishers and residents. No tour companies are allowed to operate under their bounds.

A popular place to stay here is the Bar Reef Resort. The resort has many separate villas with an open brandah so that you can enjoy the breathtaking view in front of you. The resort also comes with an infinity pool. The resort staff are extremely helpful and will help you in organizing all kinds of tours and experiences for you.
