Kalpitiya Beach, Kalpitiya Overview

Kalpitiya is located in the north of Sri Lanka and is a collection of 14 islands. The group of islands is primarily known for its waterfronts and attracts a lot of crowd throughout the year. Two things that people visit Kalpitiya, especially for are watersports and dolphins. The island is surrounded by a long stretch of sand that attracts a lot of tourists because of its scenic beauty.

History of Kalpitiya Beach

The peninsula was the significant spot for trading and smuggling of goods, even during the 17th century! It was a well-protected area during the tenure till which the city was under the grasp of the Portuguese, who exploited the region to smuggle in goods.

It was also a military base during those times. Proof of the olden days is visible by the presence of a Dutch church that stands erect till today.

It is coming up as one of the most popular tourist destinations in Sri Lanka. Whale and Dolphin watching and snorkeling and diving remain the top activities for the tourists. Spotting turtles and various types of crustaceans and corals are a common thing here. Because of the region being a marine sanctuary, some area is still protected to keep further damage from occurring to the marine life.

The best time to visit Kalpitiya beach is when the country is nowhere near the monsoon. It is because you can enjoy various activities happening in and around the beach that includes kitesurfing, boating or sailing, jeep rides and whale and dolphin watching which only take place from December to April. The beach is also open for activities such as kayaking, snorkelling, and diving. The best of which will also is witnessed during the dry months of the year.

How To Reach Kalpitiya Beach

By Road
Because the distance from the Colombo airport to Kalpitiya beach is only 3 hours, a car ride is enough. You can ask your hotel to arrange a private car for you, or you could rent a car for the day from a car rental service, plenty of which are available from anywhere around the country.

There are also buses that run from the airport. However, you will be taken to Puttalam in 4 hours. From there, the beach is another 23 kilometres further. There are regular and AC buses that run throughout the day.
