St. Jude's Shrine, Jhansi Overview

St. Jude’s Shrine, located in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh is a Roman Catholic Latin Rite shrine and is devoted to St. Jude Thaddeus. It was built by Francis Xavier Fenech. It is in the Cantonment area of Jhansi and is one of the popular churches among the Catholic community in the state.

Daily mass is conducted with much devotion and involvement at St Jude's Shrine. Also, during 28th October of every year, Christians from all over the country gather here to celebrate the Feast of St. Jude.

History and Religious Importance

St. Jude Thaddaeus, also called as Jude the Apostle lived during the times of 1st century AD. Being one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, he lived his life spreading the Word of God and Jesus. He travelled many countries in the aim of preaching about the Lord to the rest of the world. St. Jude’s Shrine is the first church in Asia dedicated in the name of St. Jude Thaddaeus.

Architecture of St. Jude's Shrine

The church is built in a spacious area and is also a sacred place of visit. It was initially built as a temporary chapel but was later expanded after many devotees started to visit the shrine often on a regular basis. The church is led by a long passage and a flight of stairs. The mere architecture and ambience of the shrine radiate serenity. The walls in the shrine are high raised and have many windows which keep the hall lighted and airy throughout. It has a seating capacity of about 300-350 people. Jesus’s idol stands against the wall, which offers a straight view from the entrance. There is also a small garden within the premises. The entire shrine has a very picturesque look and is a commonly visited holy place among the locals. It has a large parking area, and the whole church is maintained well. It is one of those famous places to visit in Jhansi. The church also offers dormitory facilities for travellers.
