Barua Sagar, Jhansi Overview

Barua Sagar in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh is a modest town belonging to the Bundelkhand region. Apart from the lake, Barua Sagar is home to several ruins of forts and temples that were once the glory of the city.

Barua Sagar Lake and Fort

Barua Sagar Lake - An iconic human-made lake that enhances the beautiful scenery of Barua Sagar.

Barua Sagar Fort - This attraction also built by Raja Udit Singh who hailed from Orchha, is located on the banks of the Barua Sagar Lake and offers magnificent views of the town and is continuously renovated by the Archeological Survey of India. The fort allows visitors throughout the week from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Jarai Ka Math - Built by the Pratiharas in 860 AD, and renovated in the 17th century, this ancient temple is recognized under the Archaeological Survey of India as an example of architectural prowess. Intricate patterns and carvings of various manifestations of Goddess Durga are a distinguishing feature of the temple.

Ruins of two major Chandela temples, namely Ghughua Math and Gandai Temple are structures made entirely out of granite that draw focus to devotion towards Lord Ganesh and Goddess Durga (both Hindu deities).

History of Barua Sagar

Barua Sagar is a region that is central to the heritage of Jhansi. One of the major attractions of the town, the Barua Sagar Lake, along with strategically developed embankments, were built by the king of Orchha, Raja Udit Singh approximately 260 years ago. Barua Sagar also identified as the site of the battle between the Bundelas and the Marathas (two major empires in Indian history)in 1744 AD. Barua Sagar is also allegedly a significant place mentioned in Vrindavan Lal Verma’s novel “Jhansi Ki Rani”, which seeks to depict the story of the queen of Jhansi, married to Raja Gangadhar Rao, the Maharaja of Jhansi in the 1840s.

Barua Sagar situated on Jhansi- Mauranipur Road is at a distance of 19 kilometres from the major city of Jhansi. The nearest airports are at Khajuraho and Gwalior. Further, the town of Barua Sagar can be accessed by rail or road through car rental services, buses or cabs easily available from Jhansi.
