Surinsar Lake, Jammu Overview

A natural bounty with mythical significance, the Surinsar Lake is the ideal spot for a relaxing picnic. A captivating lake placed in the setting of the densely wooded mountain ranges, it is a favourite among locals and tourists, serving as a perfect getaway for those looking for a change of pace from the din of the city.

The Surinsar lake and Mansar lake are considered twin lakes. As per the legend of the Mahabharata, these are the lakes that arose from the earth when the hero Arjuna shot an arrow into Mansar. The tranquillity of the forests merges with the serenity of the lake and the mountains in the backdrop, making it one of the most peaceful and picturesque locations in this mountain city. The lake is situated 30 km away from its sister lake, the Mansar lake, with the area between them being the birdwatchers haven Surinsar Mansar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to 3 mammalian species and 15 avifauna species. The lakes are bordered by a mix of mangroves and pine trees.

At the centre of the Surinsar lake lies a charming little island, home to thousands of bats. During summers, the abundance of floating lotuses on the surface of the lake adds to its elegance. Boating and swimming are restricted at the lake due to its cultural significance.
