Ramdevra Temple, Jaisalmer Overview

Ramdevra Temple is a sacred temple to the folk deity of Rajasthan - Baba Ramdevji. It is situated 12 kms from Pokhran on Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road. It is believed that Baba Ramdevji took samadhi (conscious exit from the mortal body) at Ramdevra in 1459 AD. After this, the Maharaja Ganga Singh of Bikaner constructed the temple around his Samadhi. The temple is the eternal resting place of Baba Ramdevji, a saint of the 14th century. It is believed that the saint is the incarnation of Lord Krishna by Hindus and Ramshah Pir by the Muslims who had miraculous powers and devoted his life to the upliftment of downtrodden people of the society. His worshipers are spread across Rajasthan, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Gujarat that cut across caste barriers among Hindus and Muslims. 

A main attraction near the temple premises is the tank built by Baba Ramdev known as the Ramsagar Talab. Apart from this, during August and September, people from different places make a visit to the temple for the Ramdevra Fair. It is attended by a large crowd of devotees and visitors from various locations across the globe. The fair is carried on a night long with bhajans and kirtans paying homage to Baba Ramdev.

History of Ramdevra Temple, Jaisalmer

Ramdevra Temple is dedicated to Ramdevji Baba, who was a Rajput, born in the Tomar Rajput Family back in the late 14th century. Ramdevji renounced his materialistic life and accepted sainthood very early in his life for serving the humankind. Legend states that he killed a demon and performed several miracles. At the age of 33, Baba Ramdevji took Samadhi to consciously exit his mortal body. The Ramdevra Temple was built in the early 1900s by the King of Jodhpur and Bikaner, Maharaja Ganga Singh, at the exact location where Baba took Samadhi. Every since Ramdevji devoted his life for the welfare of his people, it was believed that he was a reincarnation of Lord Krishna and also a divine being for the Muslim community.

Architecture of the temple

Ramdevra Temple has an architecture that is modern with traditional Hindu temple influences. It is completely made of brick and mortar and has a massive entry gate decorated with colourful paintings. A long flight of stairs leads to the temple that houses the sanctum sanctorum with an idol of Ramdevji Baba. This main temple is adorned with intricately carved sheets of silver, colourful paintings of Ramdevji, historical pictures and several horse replicas.

How To Reach Ramdevra Temple

Ramdevra Temple is located on Jodhpur – Jaisalmer Road, about 12 kilometres away from Pokhran and 119 kilometres away from Jaisalmer City Centre. Public transport, city buses and rental cabs are best for commuting long distances while auto rickshaws and rental bicycles are best to cover shorter courses to reach the attraction. From Jaisalmer, one has to take the route that goes via Geeta Ashram Colony Road – Jethvai Road – Station Road – NH 11. The temple is located near Ram Sarovar Pond, about 1.2 kilometres from the point where NH 11 begins.
