Broadwater Parklands, Gold Coast Overview
Broadwater Parklands is a free, 24-hour public park along Marine Parade in Southport, opposite the Australia Fair shopping centre. Built through a two-stage, $42-million-plus redevelopment completed between 2009 and 2010, it stretches along the western shore of the Gold Coast Broadwater with a 100-metre pier, tidal rockpools, the ANZAC Park war memorial, a wetland, playgrounds, and casuarina-lined paths. It sits beside the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre and a light rail stop, and draws families, joggers, and picnickers, rating 4.7 stars across more than 8,000 Google reviews.
Southport's foreshore was first set aside as public space in 1928, with a pool added in the 1960s. The current Broadwater Parklands followed a 2007 master plan: Stage 1 (2008-2009) added the pier, an events lawn, an outdoor-screen stage and a pavilion, while Stage 2, finished in 2010, added the tidal rockpools and a landscaped lookout known as "The Hill." Today the park faces the calm Broadwater and the Surfers Paradise skyline, with fig-tree avenues, free barbecues, dog-friendly lawns, and about 200 parking bays. It is a separate precinct from The Spit further north, though Broadwater jet-boat rides and river cruises operate from its shoreline.
