Ella Rock, Ella Overview

One of the best hiking and trekking sites in Sri Lanka, the Ella Rocks provide the most picturesque views from the top. The trek starts from Ella railway station to Kithal Ella railway station or Heel Oya railway track. Kithal Ella is the closest to the rock. It takes around 4 hours to trek up and down. One can sit and enjoy some coconut water and fruits sold on the top while embracing the wind and admiring the spectacular view.

Things to do in Ella Rock

There are two camping sites, and one is on an elevated position which has excellent scenery.
It's an amazing site for meditation and photography.
On your way back you will find Eucalyptus forest from where you reach the Farm-a cafe, where you can stop for some refreshing coffee and snacks.

Best time to visit Ella Rock

The best time for trekking is from December to March as it is the driest period.

The climbing season with pleasant weather and slight rain is from April to June.

Food And Restaurants Near Ella Rock

1. AK Ristoro
It is a cosy fusion Italian restaurant with a beautiful and dreamy ambience and serves Italian food that not only tastes good but is also a treat to the eyes. They have an outdoor seating arrangement and serve wines and beers.

Katsu curry is one of the favourites delicacies of the restaurant amidst the customers. A must-visit place after the trek to relax.
Prices: Prices are slightly higher than other restaurants, but the ambience and the food are worth it. The cost for two diners can be 1500 LKR approximately.

2. Remo’s restaurant
Located on Wellawaya road, it is one of the best and pocket-friendly restaurants that serve Sri Lankan delicacies. The restaurant is also vegan-friendly as most of the dishes served here are vegetarian. Enjoy some rice and Sri Lankan curry with a chilled bottle of beer!

Prices: All the dishes served here range from 334 LKR to 800 LKR.

3. Raha Ella Sri Lanka
Another vegan-friendly restaurant located on Passara road, Ella that serves Asian and Sri Lankan cuisine at a reasonable price along with beverages.

Price for two diners: 2300 LKR.

4. Ella Flower Garden Resort
Beautiful Resort amidst the greenery and forests of Ella. The restaurant of the resort serves amazing Europian, American and Sri Lankan food.

Tips

It is advised to hire a guide as they know about the short and less inimical paths or at least you should carry a proper map.
It is advised to start the hike in the morning to avoid the wrath of the scorching sun. If you are starting from Ella railway station, it is recommended to begin trekking by 9 AM from the station.
Wear breathable clothes and durable sports shoes while trekking since during rain the path can be challenging. Full pants must be worn to avoid leeches during monsoons.
Travel with the necessary safety measures like a small first aid kit, mosquito repellents and also carry enough snacks and water to keep yourself energetic and hydrated. Water bottles on the hilltop are too expensive.
Raincoat and a pair of extra clothes may be carried if the weather is likely to turn rainy.

How To Reach Ella Rock

From Ella station: From the station turn left, walk to the end of the platform and then follow the tracks and walk for about 45 minutes. You will reach Kithalella railway station.

From Kithaella station: Keep walking along the tracks past the station.

You will find a black footbridge, and after that, you will see two paths, of which you have to take the left one as it leads you to the top.

Walking ahead on this path, you will see tea plantation and then a field of long grass that you have to cross. Once you pass the long grass, turn right and walk till you reach an interim viewing point.

From here, all you have to do is walk straight to reach the top of the Ella rock.
