Trsteno Arboretum, Dubrovnik Overview

Trsteno Arboretum is a gorgeous, leafy garden laced with Renaissance architecture and exceptional garden artistry. It holds an exquisite palm collection, geometric shapes formed out of plants and trees, a pond filled with white waterlilies, numerous bullfrogs and goldfish, and a statue of Neptune.

Two giant plane trees welcome you at the entrance of the Trsteno village, among the largest of their species in Europe, they are over 500 years old and reach over 50 metres in height. The Trsteno Arboretum comprises of numerous geometric shapes formed out of bougainvillae, lavender, etc. with citrus trees drowning the entire premises in its aroma. At the centre of it all lies a stone villa (16th century) with a chapel to its back and a cliff-edge pavilion at its front which was part of a trend started by Ivan Gučetić in 1494. It was then an estate, now in the hands of the Yugoslav Academy of Science and Arts, it is an arboretum. Only a part of it is landscaped, the majority of the garden is still at the mercy of the wild which adds to the surprise factor of the premises.
