Dominican Monastery , Dubrovnik Overview

With Gothic to Renaissance architectural styles, Dominican Monastery is covered in popular Tv series Game of Thrones. It is located in the northeastern part of Dubrovnik. The Bell Tower, housed inside the monastery, can be seen miles away. The most beautiful part here is the cloister.

In the heart of the monastery, there is a beautiful courtyard and a 15th century Gothic cloister with arches. The monastery established in 1225 features beautiful stairways leading to the prestigious church erected in the remembrance of Saint Dominic in the 14th century. Rebuilt after the 1667 Earthquake, Romanesque parts have been preserved but the mixture of Gothic and Renaissance styles dominates.

There is also a museum within the monastery complex. The main exhibit of the museum is a painting by Titian. Also of interest are the paintings representing Dubrovnik’s flourishing 15th -  16th century art scene. It has interesting pieces related to religion and illuminated manuscripts as well.

A must see architecture in the town is the St Dominic Street with Dominican monastery and it was from the steps of the monastery that the speech of Game of Thrones was given making it a popular spot .

Good months of visit are from September through May with skinny skies , pleasant climate and fewer crowds. It is a lovely place to wander for a bit and a nice escape from the busy streets.
