Old Fortress of Corfu, Corfu Overview

The Old Fortress of Corfu is just a short walk from the historic Old Town of Corfu. It has rich historical and cultural significance and is listed among the UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is built on a rocky peninsula and offers a beautiful panoramic view of the cityscape and coastline. Several buildings inside the fort are worth seeing.

These include a military chapel, a prison built by the Venetians in 1786, the church of St. George built in 1840, English-built barracks, and a military hospital, now a music school. It has a unique architecture that blends each period’s design distinctly visible, like the winged lion of St. Mark, the cannons, the inscriptions, the embossed Venetian emblem, and more. Many concerts and cultural events happen in the fortress’ open area called Versiada. There are also plenty of cafes and restaurants for refreshments and delicious meals. There are a variety of historic landmarks with a range of architectural styles and a museum of artefacts, paintings, and historic Byzantine objects. There are also gift shops and restaurants onsite. It is surrounded by an old moat that houses boats with a small beach nearby. There is a bridge that connects the Old Town and the fortress.
